Take a look at this Aboriginal design recycled rubber door mat, called "Our Place"
This recycled rubber door mat depicts the map of Australia, arbitrarily divided up, reflecting the many different versions and interpretations possible of any national map boundaries. Australia is a richly diverse nation; our state and territory borders are only one possible way to talk about the cultures and languages shared across the country.
This contemporary design was created by Lee Townsend, an Australian Aboriginal artist with roots in Dharug and Kamilaroi country, New South Wales.
She is an educator who believes in using art to start a conversation about cultural understanding. As you journey around this map, it invites you to consider the history of the land you are walking on and the blend of knowledge and culture that has shaped Australia as we know it today.
Our Place rubber floor mat is lightweight, easy to move from place to place, and a cinch to clean. Made from a combination of recycled rubber and plastics, all you need to do is wipe it down with a damp sponge or shake the dirt and dust away. As part of production, they are treated with Stain Guard to ward off any major disasters too.
We love this door mat outside a classroom, or school entrance to invoke conversations of culture and community. Pair these door mats with our Aboriginal mats to embed Aboriginal culture more deeply within the school community as something natural and everyday.
Our Place makes a wonderful souvenir gift from Australia, and can be used as a thank you to conference delegates, workshop hosts, speakers, and other VIP's.
Our Place recycled door mat is beloved around the world by interior designers, teachers, shopkeepers, and tradespeople.

Door mat mapBy: janalie besoff on 22 January 2017I gave this to a primary teacher friend to use with 2 sets of 6 yarning circle mats. Its big enough for an adult bottom to sit on while the kids sit on the little ones for reading/craft/yarning. I think the items can be used creatively for games etc as well. Seems very sturdy and is colourful should appeal to the kids and help remind of the aboriginal nations in this continent as well as symbols for painting. A bit heavy for carrying around but this stops it blowing away if youre not sigtting on it outdoors.
Recycled Mats is a proud long-term member of the Indigenous Art Code, which ensures transparent, fair and ethical business trade in works of art by Indigenous artists.
