The design on the mat is called 'Tutuni' which means 'spear' in Tiwi and it was designed by Tiwi artist, Tictac Moore
Tictac has used the spear from a photo of her Grandpa, Allie Miller Mungatopi, as her inspiration. All Tictac's knowledge of her Grandpa has been passed down through stories, photos and books. There is a photo in one of the books of him standing holding a spear, painted up and dressed ready for a ceremony and it is this spear she has used for the design.
Tictac's representation of the sun, which is her skin group, is in the centre of the mat - this symbol is iconic for her and features in most of her art.
Art plays an important role in the culture of the Tiwi Islands, which consists of two main islands, Bathurst Island and Melville Island. The Islands are separated from the Australian mainland by the Apsley Strait.
This intricate and geometric design is perfect for a teaching tool to open conversation about culture, family and community, and how we fit into this bigger picture. Click here for an interesting read about teaching Aboriginal culture in primary school
Made with recycled plastic, this Tiwi Aboriginal design mat is waterproof, easy to clean and UV-treated. It is a perfect way to celebrate diversity at outdoor gatherings and while camping. The closely woven weave creates a soft and comfortable surface to sit or lay on whilst on grass, sand, soil or concrete.
As with most of the styles in our entire range of recycled plastic mats, this design is reversible. Not only does it extend the longevity of the mat, it effectively means two designs for the price of one!
