Joongarrabah- The Place of the pelican
Joongarrabah is a peak that looks over the Tweed and Gold Coast Region. This iconic landmark is a vital part of the local cultural landscape. For many generations, this special cultural place has been significant in the teaching of “Garrima” or respect - Respect for land, elders, each other, and all things.
Inspired by this motif, we'd like to introduce our newest custom pod cocoon chair, designed by our beloved local artist, Christine Slabb of Bundjalung country.
Our new POD CHAIRS are our most innovative, exciting product yet!
Design specially commissioned for the 2018 Commonwealth Games
In collaboration with Recycled Mats, this pod chair design is also part of a specially commissioned series for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 to celebrate the coming together of nations from across the globe to partake in sport, culture, art and entertainment.
The Garrima design was created to promote the beauty, culture and traditions of the local Indigenous people of the Gold Coast.
The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 team has been instrumental in their work to highlight Indigenous culture across the entire competition, with Indigenous art and design featured on uniforms, on the Games Mascot Borobi, on the flags, posters and signage, and in home wares and interior design in the Commonwealth Games 2018 Festivals & Events spaces.
We were honoured to have played a part in this process, and are thrilled that our collaborations with local artists have been highlighted in such a public space.
Our eye-catching Garrima pod chairs featured in the "Jarjum" (meaning, "All our children") Learning & Play Space at the Commonwealth Games, where they were loved by adults and children alike. We've adored watching all the Facebook and Instagram videos of children turning them into cubby houses, turtles, and nap zones, but our favourite was definitely spying two elderly people taking a little kip inside our Garrima Pod chairs! Adorable.
The pods were set up alongside our Garrima recycled plastic mats in Teal and Navy , and our comfy Garrima cushions in Navy or Teal were there too. All together, these three Recycled Mats products helped to create a comfortable relaxing zone inside the dome for visitors and spectators, families and children looking to recuperate and rest between games events and activities.
Designed by local Fingal artist Christine Slabb, the Garrima pod chairs have been a rip-roaring success in the space. We've taken hundreds of enquires about them and expect them to take up residence in lots of homes across Australia soon.
We adore this newest addition to the Pod range - the Garrima design has translated so beautifully, it's a delight to see.
Pods - the talking point of a room
The look combines the laid-back vibe of a beanbag with the designer flair of a vintage occasional chair. Kick back with a book, snuggle up with the kids or relax with friends, bohemian style!
Your pod cocoon chair is guaranteed to be a talking point in any living room, classroom or chill out space.
Dr Nicole Grant, a paediatric occupational therapist, recently reviewed our pod chairs. She recommended these innovative egg-style seats for homes, preschools, kindergartens, schools or libraries – anywhere that children could benefit from a personal space to retreat into when they’re overstimulated.
For children on the autism spectrum, a pod chair can work in a similar way to a weighted blanket, offering a cosy, secure, supportive sitting space. It’s like getting a hug while you read or relax!
“Pods can be used as a support tool to help manage behaviour, mood swings, and the challenges of sibling rivalry,” says Nicole.
All this from one amazing and beautiful pod cocoon chair!
