We are so proud that the 'Sand Goanna' design by Aboriginal artist Caitlin Trindall has been chosen by Tourism Australia to be featured in the 2022 ad campaign

This piece is a careful collision of both tradition and contemporary art. Caitlin often uses traditional symbols to share messages and stories within the artwork, but also the use of bright vibrant colours to create a modern feel.

"Creating art gives me purpose, it heals my soul and fills my heart with joy. The connections I have developed with people and communities through my artwork is incredible, and it has given me a stronger sense of identity to my people and my culture," says Caitlin.

The sand goanna is one of the totems significant to the artist's mob, the Kamilaroi people. This mat design represents the knowledge and connections between people and places, that are carried through the goanna. The background of the design shows the tracks of the goanna, with the lines representing the trail that his tail leaves in the sand, and the dots on either side are his footprints as he walks. The design also incorporates campsites of men and women who gather together to share yarns, pass down knowledge, enriching their future through generational teaching. See how Recycled Mat's Indigenous designs can meet the outcomes of the Educational Curriculum

Like our entire range of recycled plastic outdoor mats, the 'Sand Goanna' is created using recycled products, which include plastic bags, plastic water bottles and other soft polypropylene, so that you can enjoy art and outdoor activities with family and friends in a sustainable way. Take your 'Sand Goanna' to the beach, on picnics or create relaxation spaces on your patio, or in your garden. It is also reversible, meaning you get two looks - just flip it over!

Our innovative recycled plastic mats are waterproof and easily cleaned. Sand and grass simply shake off, and any heavier soiling can be wiped down or hosed off. This makes them perfect for camping and other (potentially messy) outdoor events!

If you're here thinking about gearing up your outdoor space, how about a doormat to keep the outdoors outside (the turf ones work extra well!).

We're now exploring how we can 're-recycle' your unwanted mats! Our exciting initiative for re-purposing and re-using them is a must-read.
