Joongarrabah is a peak that overlooks the Tweed and Gold Coast Region. This iconic landmark is a vital part of the local cultural landscape.
For many generations, this special place has been significant in the teaching of “Garrima” respect.
2018 Commonwealth Games - Commissioned Design
In collaboration with Recycled Mats, the mat design is also part of a specially commissioned series for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 to celebrate the coming together of nations from across the globe to partake in sport, culture, art and entertainment.
The Garrima design was created to promote the beauty, culture and traditions of the local Indigenous people of the Gold Coast.
The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 team has been instrumental in their work to highlight Indigenous culture across the entire competition, with Indigenous art and design featured on uniforms, on the Games Mascot Borobi, on the flags, posters and signage, and in homewares and interior design in the Commonwealth Games 2018 Festivals & Events spaces.
We were honoured to have played a part in this process, and are thrilled that our collaborations with local artists have been highlighted in such a public space.
Our eye-catching Garrima recycled plastic mats featured in the "Jarjum" (meaning, "All our children") Learning & Play Space at the Commonwealth Games, and also in the VIP Green Room.
Designed by local Fingal artist Christine Slabb, the Garrima cultural mats have been a roaring success in the space, and we've had lots of enquiries about them from visitors and spectators.
We adore this addition to the Recycled Plastic Mats range and its modern take on ancient wisdom.
Reversible Cultural Mats
Garrima is a reversible mat in teal and white, so you've two choices on how to display your mat on picnics, camping and caravan holidays, outings, and days on the beach.
We suggest pairing it with one of our new super soft cotton beach throws.
These beach throws double as a silky soft lightweight alternative to a towel, or transform into a sarong, to get you from beach to car.
Don't forget to include one of our best-selling summer picnic tables. You'll be set for a fabulous day out.
Recycled plastic, comes in a recycled and reusable plastic carry bag
These mats are reversible. Photos show both sides of the same mat. Mat colours may differ slightly from the images shown due to the different inks used in individual print runs.
All our floor mats have been made to the best attainable standards from UV treated recycled polypropylene. Follow our guide to mat maintenance for cleaning and storage instructions. Our floor mats and playmats are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, but extensive exposure to sun or rain will lead to fading and deterioration over time.
Not suitable for children under 3 years

My favourit design to dateBy: Vicci Oliver on 26 February 2018I absolutely adore this design! These mats are just so easy to use. We use this particular mat for our nomadic playgroup and it really sets the tone when the families arrive for a day of play and exploration. It is the perfect base for us to invite our Wildlings to gather for songs and stories. It makes a beautiful backdrop for our photos as well. We love it!
GARRIMA matBy: Suzanne Dee on 14 February 2018I bought this for Science discussions at school. The students love this and the size is perfect. They enjoy sitting in the circle on the seated figure symbols. We have a high Aboriginal dynamic and suits our school.
