The name of this authentic Indigenous mat design says it all – gather your friends, family, students or colleagues, and sit together. Who knows what you might learn?
'Gatherings' is designed by respected Australian Aboriginal artist De Greer Yindimincarlie, of the Wiradjuri Nation in central New South Wales. This reversible playmat or camping mat includes many different Aboriginal symbols. At this gathering, you’ll find men sitting around campfires, women talking at campsites, digging tools, spears, boomerangs and coolamons. Can you spot them all?
The 'Gatherings' Aboriginal design recycled plastic mat, in bright orange and black, is comfortable for sitting and walking on, durable and long-lasting, whilst also looking amazing. This vibrant design is ideal as a teaching tool or group time rug, helping children learn more about their own and other cultures while they read, eat or play.
It’s a useful introduction to Indigenous symbolism in art and opens young minds to the world of storytelling through pictures. Older children can extend their learning and look for similar symbols in other Indigenous art or stories. Click here for an interesting read about teaching Aboriginal culture in primary school.
Like all our recycled outdoor mats, Gatherings is hard-wearing and easy to clean, making it ideal for classrooms, libraries or any community space. As one of our more compact mat designs, it is lightweight for folding or transporting, so it’s easily moved from story corner to a shady spot for lunch. It also makes a fantastic teaching or picnicking mat for excursions to the beach or bush.
Being reversible, this design gives you two looks for the price of one, and also extends the life of your mat. Many educators also pair it with a selection of our Aboriginal cushion covers to inject some more colour, culture and comfort.
We are proud that all our Aboriginal Design Recycled Mats have been created in consultation with Aboriginal artists and their communities. The designs on these mats have been given the green light by the traditional people of the land, to share with the wider community. It's a great way to open the conversation about culture in our ever-evolving, modern world.
We're now exploring how we can 're-recycle' your unwanted mats! Our exciting initiative for re-purposing and re-using them is a must-read.
